You can imagine that there’s a big difference between 4 and 5 card omaha. The difference between hold’em and omaha is very big so there must be some difference between 4 and 5 card omaha games. And sure it is! In 5 card omaha you have way more chances to make strong hands. And good hands have even more potential to make great hands. Imagine a hand like 98765 – it’s almost guaranteed that you can make a straight with such a hand. But now take a look at hands like AAKK8. It’s not that strong any more. Sure it’s still a great hand but I’d prefer 98765. If you’re playing 4 card omaha you should still prefer AAKK hands over 8765 type of hands. You see: hands that are strong in 4 card omaha do not have to be equally strong in 5 card omaha.

So, what hands should you play in 5 card omaha? First of all you have to know what determines a strong 4 card omaha hand. It’s the connectivity that makes 4 card omaha hands strong. Hands like AAJT or JT98 are great hands. The same is true for 5 card omaha. Hands like AAKQJ are extremly strong because they not only have a strong pair in it, they also show a great connectivity. So if you know good 4 card omaha hands you should not have any problems spotting good 5 card omaha hands.

One strategy that works for 4 card omaha also works for 5 card omaha. And that is: selecting a hand with potential and play it ultra aggressive! So just pick up a hand that has a lot of potential like 87654, QQAKJ or something like that and play it aggressive. Raise before the flop and be willing to risk all your chips on the flop or the turn if you have a legitimate draw.

But there’s a big difference between 4 card and 5 card omaha you should pay attention to. The hands in 5 card omaha are way better. It’s way easier to make some very strong hands in 5 card omaha because you have one more card you can use to build hands. If you play 4 card omaha there are six hand combinations. If you have AKQJ you can use: AK, QJ, AQ, AJ, KJ and KQ – 6 possible hands. Now what about 5 card omaha? There you have 10 combinations. Let’s take AKQJT: AK, AQ, AJ, AT, KQ, KJ, KT, QJ, QT, JT ! That’s a lot isn’t it?
So it’s way easier to make great hands with 5 card omaha and you should pay attention to that. Don’t overplay your hands. Only look for the nuts!

There’s one exception. You can’t make a flush easier than in 4 card omaha. You only can get two cards in two suites which is also possible in 4 card draw. So it’s not more likely to make a flush in 5 card omaha than it is in 4 card omaha.
